The 5 Most Unrealistic College Acceptances in TV History

EA, ED, RA, RD — if your brain automatically translated those acronyms to "Early Admission," "Early Decision," "Regular Admission," and "Regular Decision," then you're probably in the middle of college admissions season. Or, you're scarred from an admission's season past, writing all those existential-crisis-inducing essays on what you wanted to do with your life (in 650 words or less!), then holding your breath until that first letter came. Would the envelope be a thick letter of acceptance or a thin letter of rejection? College admissions are so competitive these days that most applicants receive a mixture of both letters, but we all know that one kid who got in everywhere they applied. They were a genius, an athlete or, well, fictional.
As if TV doesn't set enough unrealistic expectations for our lives, TV shows for teenagers love to give them their greatest, most unreachable academic dreams. So what if the cast has elaborate breakfast scenes every morning that would've made them late to school everyday? So what if the only time we see anyone "study" is as a plot device to get closer to their crush? So what if they're holding that book upside down? They didn't even fill out applications… But they're in!
With that in mind, here are five examples of TV shows whose characters would have never gotten into the schools they ended up at, except for the fact that they don't actually exist:

'Gilmore Girls'
Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel)
I can understand how Rory got accepted to Yale, she was a legacy. But it has to be said: Rory Gilmore would not have realistically been accepted to Harvard. Sorry, but her application consisted of what? A 4.0, a single extracurricular and…? Sheer obsession with the school? Anyone can decorate their room with Harvard merch, but that doesn't mean that they should, or that it would be enough to get them accepted into the college. Don't even get me started on her acceptance to Princeton.

'Gossip Girl'
Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) & Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester)
For a group of city kids whose parents definitely could've paid their way into college, the characters on Gossip Girl underwent the most intense college admissions plot lines in TV history. Serena applied to Yale just because Blair said she'd never get in — rude! But in the real world, probably true. This is TV, though, so of course Serena got in. Then, she turned it down for Blair and had to make the choice between a rock and a hard place: Columbia, or Brown. When did Serena fill out all these applications?
In the meantime, Blair got herself expelled for academic dishonesty, which should've prevented her from getting into any school at all, but instead she "settled" for NYU. A university with a 32% acceptance rate isn't exactly a safety school, Blair, but okay.

'Awkward.'
Matty McKibben (Beau Mirchoff)
Most of the characters on Awkward. got into very realistic colleges for who they are as people and what they had or hadn't accomplished on the show. That's why Matty's acceptance to U.C. Berkeley stands out like a sore thumb. Yes, we are told that Matty is on the soccer team, but how often do we actually see him play soccer? Once or twice? Enough for fans to get a GIF of him shirtless? And then, based on that scant footage, we're supposed to believe he plays well enough to get a scholarship to one of the best schools in California? I wonder how that first day of practice went.

'Pretty Little Liars'
Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario), Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale), Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell), & Hannah Marin (Ashley Benson)
On top of constantly being blackmailed, at any point in time at least one of the Pretty Little Liars is being traumatized somehow. For example: by being buried alive; getting drugged; getting kidnapped; getting shot; falling off a cliff; almost getting murdered; actually murdering someone else; and/or discovering the dead bodies that other people murdered!
Doesn't leave a lot of time for schoolwork or applying to university… And yet, they all got into college. Somehow, the most realistic post-high-school storyline is Hannah's, and she ran away to New York City. Maybe the rest of them channeled their trauma into really moving admissions essays? I'd like to read those.

'Glee'
Rachel Berry (Lea Michele)
In an episode aptly named "Choke," Rachel messes up her audition for the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts. Despite the fact that you could throw a stone in NYC and hit a theatre school, Rachel is set on NYADA. She begs the admissions officer to let her start over, then over again. The admissions officer gives her a realistic "NO" — then shows up to the New Directioners regional performance and accepts her into the program based on her cover of Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now." Oh, and a speech made on her behalf by her ex-boyfriend, who couldn't get into the school himself. If only that was all it took in the real world.
